Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetes affects more than just blood sugars. High blood sugars cause damage to most other body organs, as well as the eyes. Diabetic patients are at a higher risk for glaucoma and cataracts. Diabetic retinopathy is the main concern, and even more of a concern is that this can lead to blindness if undiagnosed or untreated.

Diabetic retinopathy damages the blood vessels in the retina, leading to possible partial vision loss. Diabetic patients must monitor their vision regularly. Diabetic retinopathy can lead to blindness before the patient is even aware they have it. Early detection is essential.

During a diabetic eye examination, pupil dilation is performed to allow Dr. Waters to see completely inside the eye, all the way to the back. According to the ADA (American Diabetes Association), type 1 diabetics need their first eye exam in the first five years after diagnosis. Type 2 diabetics should be examined soon after diagnosis. The difference between the two is that type 2 diabetes can be present for many years before it is discovered. If this is the case, diabetic retinopathy can already be present and need urgent treatment.
