Treatment of Eye Infections

Eye infections are more than just uncomfortable. Untreated infections can affect your long-term vision. If you think you have an eye infection, it is important to get it assessed and treated. Eyes and every part of the body are susceptible to germs and infections at any time.

Megan Waters, OD, is an experienced optometrist in Livonia, Michigan, and provides expert treatment for all types of eye infections.

An eye infection occurs in or around the eyes and may be caused by fungus, virus, or bacteria. the most common eye infections are:

• Acanthamoeba keratitis (common to contact lens wearers)

• Fungal keratitis

• Viral keratitis

• Endophthalmitis

• Conjunctivitis or pink eye

Common symptoms of eye infections:

• Sensitivity to light

• Blurry vision

• Swelling around the eyes

• Watery eyes or dry eyes

• Painful eyes

• Itchy eyes

• Discharge from the eyes

Eye discharge may require testing to determine the type of infection present. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Waters will develop an appropriate treatment plan to make you more comfortable and eliminate the infection as quickly as possible.

The type of infection determines any medications that may be prescribed. Antibiotic eye drops, antiviral eye drops, or steroid eye drops can be used singularly or in combination to reduce inflammation and heal the eyes. A follow-up appointment in approximately one week may be needed to be sure the infection is healing as planned.
